Comm 101C Introduction to Communication Studies

Instruction: Review the departments website (sample syllabi, faculty profiles, areas of study, event listings etc,) and write a 500-700 word reflection on how you see yourself fitting in to the field of communication studies making substantive use of at least one course theory.

                In the field of communication there are many open ideas where people are allowed to focus upon such as human interaction, relationships, forensics , media, culture , language and etc. For myself I see myself fitting into the world of communications because my personal universal mind that wanders and wants to learn more about the different areas of a certain study. Communication will not only improve my skills in daily social interaction , but also establish additional skills that will allow me to advance upon graduation. Though communication in my opinion has a variety of career options leading no specific or direct one to categorize into. I have mainly used communication in my part time job which is Field Marketing. Through my job of  doing field marketing, I have taken advantage in what I have learned in different communication classes and using them to my advantage to serve different customer basis depending on sex, gender , age , dietary preferences which all have a lot to do with being able to go around  rather than directive of demographics. Not only do I fit into communication , but communication fits me. According to Warren and Fasset “ social constructionism is the view of communication as a process , as a messy enterprise that we all engage in , searching for meaning in ourselves and each other as we make our way through the world.” Social constructionism is a way of guiding ourselves through life which is what I feel that communication as a major does. Because of the variety of courses offered through the communication department. Communication gives myself an opportunity to explore and improve  skills.

After mapping out the department website , I realized that what I love about being a Communication major, is being able to talk to my professors and having the assistance that other majors don’t have. There are actually advisors who help you , workshops offered to help with different things , and  so much more. And not only that but as a communication major there are greater opportunities that could be used such as Graduate school to gain a masters or even to become a lawyer. Communication is everything to do with how we see the world and how we understand it and with that I feel like those who are communication majors are more prepared for the world more than others because not only do we have the essential skills but the ability to find ourselves in many different places and still be able to able to do beyond amazing in the world.
